A shout-out to Ryan, a Warcraft friend from back in the day. This strip is pretty close to being a verbatim conversation we had on Facebook one day when I heard he was hosting a Civ4 LAN party. I realize that the Civ series has developed a huge multiplayer cult, and that’s entirely awesome. (The early looks at how Civ 5 is building the gaming community directly into the gaming architecture is just the coolest thing ever.)
But as someone who spent a lot (repeat: a LOT) of time on Civ 1 and 2, sitting along trying to out-think the computer, I just can’t reconcile my traditional multiplayer experiences (the Team Fortresses of the world) with the idea of me agonizing over which citizens I should turn into farmers and which should be tax collectors. My little mind is too feeble, apparently.
Regardless, maybe Civ 5 is a good opportunity to try the online component on for size. It’s been far too long since I laid waste to my neighbors.

If there’s any game franchise worthy of respect and veneration, it’s the Sid Meier empire.
