And so, on Monday, I invite scorn and invective.
While I respect the Final Fantasy series for pushing video games into a whole new realm, artistically speaking, I’m sorry, as a game, for me they fail the acid test. That being, “Will this make me fall asleep during the first half hour of playing it?”
I haven’t played or, really, even watched a FF game in years, but Andrea rented XIII this weekend, and I tried my damnedest to watch her play it. For half an hour. Then, fighting heavy eyelids, I excused myself to go upstairs for the night. A gorgeous game, no doubt, and I’m sure the Star Wars prequels fans out there will just masturbate with glee over this thing–the opening bits at least looked an awful lot like George Lucas green screen porn. But…
Anyway, I’ve belabored this point enough. Not my cup of tea. If you’re digging the game, good on you. I just need something with a little more momentum to hold my interest.

Your first mistake it that you’re playing the 360 version. Not that that changes the glut of cutscenes or the 15 hour tutorial, but no self-respecting JRPG fan plays JRPGs on 360 (exception: Lost Odyssey), especially when you only have to wait a year for the ‘exclusive’ to be released for PS3 on one disk instead of 3-4.
